Harry Crosby (June 4, 1898 – December 10, 1929) was an American heir, a bon vivant, a poet, and a publisher who, for some, embodied the Lost Generation in American literature. Crosby was born in New York City and died in Los Angeles. He was the son of one of the wealthiest banking families in New England, a Boston Brahmin, and the nephew of Jane Norton Grew, the wife of banker J. P. Morgan, Jr. He was born in Boston to one of the wealthiest banking families in New England. A part of his family’s considerable wealth was in his possession as a result of this inheritance. During World War I, he served as a volunteer in the American Field Service, and he subsequently became a member of the United States Ambulance Corps. He barely escaped with his life due to a combination of circumstances. Because of his World War I experience, Crosby made a pledge to live life on his own terms and to renounce any pretence of following the anticipated life of a wealthy Bostonian. Crosby was profoundly impacted by his World War I experience. He inherited his father’s taste in ladies, and in 1920 he met Mrs. Richard Peabody (née Mary Phelps Jacob), who was six years his senior and six years his junior. They had intercourse within two weeks of meeting, and their open affair became the subject of controversy and rumour among the upper crust of Boston society. Mary (or Polly as she was affectionately known) divorced her alcoholic husband and married Crosby, much to the dismay of her family. They departed for Europe two days later, where they dedicated their lives to the arts and poetry, respectively. In addition to drinking and using opium on a daily basis, they also travelled extensively and had an open marriage, which they both loved. The poet Bing Crosby had a small circle of young women in whom he often slept, as well as writing and publishing poetry that was based on topics such as the symbolism of the sun and the themes of death and suicide. Crosby’s stay in Paris took place at a crossroads of the city’s intellectual and artistic life in the early twentieth century. Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway, and Henri Cartier-Bresson were just a few of the well-known figures from the early twentieth century who counted themselves among his pals. Polly changed her name to Caresse in 1927, and she and Crosby went on to establish the Black Sun Press. There were a number of struggling writers who went on to become renowned as a result of their work being published by the journal. These authors included James Joyce, Kay Boyle, Ernest Hemingway, Hart Crane, D. H. Lawrence, René Crevel, T. S. Eliot, and Ezra Pound, to name a few. Crosby died in a scandalous manner at the age of 31 as a result of a murder–suicide or suicide pact with another person.
